Lastly, think long and hard about using any type of pool heating system. All pool heaters are intensely energy consumptive, costing incredible amounts of money when in use. Many can be measured by their dollars/hour rate. They also break down frequently and don’t last very long typically. If you can’t get enough heat via the climate you live in for a pool, reconsider having one installed. You can get good pool covers that double as pool heaters you can use each spring if your swimming season is shorter than most.
Fourth, consider how long you plan to live in the house before spending such an amount. If you are subject to transfer or know you will be moving in two years or less, do not bother. If, on the other hand, you are well dug in and have no plans to move from the home for the foreseeable future – go for it.
Ten Things to Consider Before Installing an In-Ground Swimming Pool
Secondly, it is vital for you to take into account the impact of such a serious change in your homes value and resell ability. It does not follow that the amount you spend on the pool will in turn increase your homes equity position by that same amount. In fact, depending on where you live, you might actually reduce your home value by having one installed. People who buy homes with pools are a well defined lot. A house with a pool is either something a buyer is looking for or not. The relative number of – house with a pool – buyers decreases dramatically and corresponding to the shortened swimming seasons common the farther north you live.
Fifth, no matter what type of pool you are considering, do not forget that swimming pools have an overhead cost that lasts forever. You will have to commit to performing all maintenance duties yourself or hire it out. In either case, once a pool is installed it is both a commitment as well as a financial obligation to take care of it forever, or as long as you are in the home.
Sixth, consider all the various types of water treatment methodologies that are available in modern pools. Older designs often use older technology and often are less efficient or more expensive over time. Pick a knowledgeable contractor and do your homework on this, trust me. You want to target the safest and lowest maintenance approach using as few chemicals as possible as a general rule.
Ninth, you must not forget to consider the privacy and liability issues that are inherent with pool ownership. If you don’t have a fence around your backyard and someone falls in and drowns you will be liable. If on the other hand you’ve a high fence with a locked gate around it – you have a good chance of mitigating such a liability.
First off, do not kid yourself. It is a fairly expensive undertaking. The cost to have an in ground pool installed starts at approximately 10k and goes nowhere but significantly up from there. You have all heard it before and it is never truer that with swimming pool contractors – you get what you pay for. Avoid doing it on a shoestring budget.
Seventh, pick your contractor carefully and do some research on them before making any commitments. Having a pool installed is the type of activity that contractors expect to be one of many proposals. Never feel compelled by anything the contractor may say that would hurry your decision – or receive a special price that’s only good for that one offer. That’s a warning sign – heed it. Do not forget all the other parts and pieces you will require too. Pools don’t vacuum themselves. There is a dizzying array of vacuum types to consider. Material for another article I suspect.
Eight, do not forget to place enough emphasis on safety and security. This is particularly important if you have small children. If so, spend a few extra dollars to put a good childproof fence around it. Avoid choosing any dark decking material/colors, they absorb incredible amounts of heat on sunny days. Also, don’t choose any style of decking that is slick when wet. Some surfaces are just safer than others. Some last longer. Choose carefully.
Third, do not put too much pool in too little a backyard. If installing a pool in your backyard would completely eliminate your lawn area, consider a smaller pool. A pool is a thing of beauty when it genuinely complements the home. They are available in every size and shape imaginable and should be both functional and ornamental to your home. Do not hurry the process. Take the time to make good decisions that are well thought out. It will forever change your home.

Billiards has always been a very trendy match right from its inception. However the recognition of the match must be credited to a man called John Thurston who actually made the match well liked all over the world. The match that was the trademark of the hierarchy and the elite in the eighteenth century has gone through many modifications.
However the term Billiards is very contextual and its meaning varies from place to place. Anglican referred to this very well liked match of Snookers as the sophisticated and classy Billiards.
Many residents of United Kingdom feel that the match was predominantly Anglican in nature. The match of Billiards is played with the trademark white, spot white and the coveted red ball where a person has to hit the balls in the right pockets. There are points for those who can hit the balls into the pockets. The match is always played on a twelve feet table. Besides the large billiard-table, the balls and the cue stick the match has very few requirements.
Billiards as previously mentioned often refers to the context in which the match is played. There are many ball matches played on a table, which people commonly refer to the match of Billiards. Thus the term is often used to incorrectly describe all matches played on a table with balls. England got really hooked onto the match of Snookers in the eighty’s but it was actually in the late nineteenth century that the match became truly important in India as the country was strongly influenced by England.
There are many dissimilarities between the US and Anglican format of the match. Though the nuances of the match are pretty much the same, there are some differences as well. To understand the match one must know the details of the match as played in the eighteenth century. The history of that area was extremely eventful as the era belonged to Napoleon – the greatest emperor France had ever seen, the coming of the momentous Industrial Revolution and the efficient King George on the throne of England.
The New World had begun to capture the fancy of all those coming in contact with it. Technological advancements and new innovative discoveries kept people hungry for more. The rich now having come into the fore fold needed a place appropriate for them to relax and enjoy. They needed a venue for investing the money they were inheriting or earning. It was at this juncture that Mr. Thurston stepped up and gave the world a new match to take their minds off business and to sit back and enjoy.
Historical stories that were doing the rounds long after the match was discovered was that a certain Mr. Gillow had given him – a cabinet builder, the opportunity to build a nice billiard table in the United Kingdom. However Mr. Gillow was finding groping with the logistics and practicalities of the situation difficult. It was complicated for him to get a good control over the products required for the match as the location of his factory was in the distant Lancashire situated some odd two hundred and fifty miles from his mainstay in London posed to be quite serious issues for him.
In the end of the eighteenth century things started looking up for Mr. Thurston who now had his own factory in London. He capitalized on the growth and demand for entertainment fare and products that were becoming really popular in England. However Billiard tables were very different in those times, as they did not have the typical and trademark slate beds. Those tables were made out of wood, which was prone to cracking up and suddenly shrinking in size. Thus it was quite clear that one couldn’t make classy billiard tables out of them.
However the man was a genius himself and nothing can take away his ingenuity and brilliance from him. It was he who had set the benchmark for world-class billiard tables that we now know. It was he who gave new dimensions and look to the billiard tables with the use of vulcanized rubber and other materials. He made sure that the billiard tables were strong enough to endure the weight.
However his designs of the billiard tables were not confined to United Kingdom though, each table would weigh over one and a half ton. His designs were soon seen all over the world. One of his early admirers John Brunswick chanced upon a typically Thurston table that his client had got hold of somewhere in Cincinnati. Brunswick was totally enamored by the beauty of the table having absolutely no clue about the interesting phase which was to come about very soon.
With more and more prosperity and economic growth in the world caused due to Industrial Revolution, the rich were developing a new taste and desire of owning the coveted billiard tables. It was observed that the ball matches the elite indulged in usually did not involve pockets. Surprisingly carom is the only match that bears resemblance to billiards. Carom which was just another table match was played as well with points like billiards with the winner was the person who got the highest number of points- a close resemblance to Billiards or snooker. Billiard soon saw a popularity growth in India with colored balls also coming into the match along with the traditional white and red balls. This came to be known as snooker. In US the match of snooker was slowly changing mode and developing many new interesting formats, which were as interesting as the original match. US soon saw a number of billiard matches were being played with balls having numbers on them clearly breaking away from the older format of the match.
Making money and that too fast money happened easily in the twentieth century. This trend was recorded due to the technological growth in the world drawing many brave hearts to make lots of fast money. Money always gives one the desire to flaunt the riches and of course one’s most prized possessions, one being the billiard table, which came to be looked upon as a sign of great prosperity and wealth.
Companies like Burroughs and E. J. Riley had already begun capitalizing on the popular trend of building snooker tables with mahogany and oak. Some of the tables were designed with golden leaves and were sent to the farthest ends of the Anglican Empire. This match however had a format, which was restricted among the elite and the upper classes.
Billiards has never been a common man’s match as it’s not easy for someone to buy a hand designed big snooker table. It was relatively easier for him to visit the public billiard tables, which were popular in the entire country. United States after being almost crippled with the onslaught of the Civil War was soon found to be sprawling with over sixty billiard tables. The private company of J.M. Brunswick was soon eager to grow in size and completely take over the stakes of his competitors. The company, which was a shipping equipment giant now ventured into manufacturing some tables and cues. These billiard rooms were essentially turning into very active areas for discussing and sharing views and opinions as well.
The momentous Second World War finally ended up changing the face of the billiard match and its various facets throughout the world. England after being totally handicapped and crippled after the war was in no position to go and buy those luxurious tables in those turbulent times. Some of the big names in the industry were taken over by some of the giants in the industry while others closed down.
Billiards or Snooker continued to become popular in England. The rooms in which the match was played was essentially some dark dingy confines with the strong smell of alcohol reeking from every corner of the room, easily giving away the class of the people who frequented these places. With the capitalist ideas and ideals now creating waves all over the world it was just a matter of time since a new phase would hit the Anglican Empire. This new phase saw many turning to the match all over again.
With the match having kicked off a storm in England, many Billiard table owners were offering a share of profits and rentals to those who were looking to build a business in this field. Operator was soon going to create a big impression on the match that was slowly growing popular not only in England but all over the world.
Another unusual thing was found to be happening in United States with the coming of the coin-operated industry, which largely thrived, on insertion of coins. There were a new crop of industries that were now beginning to capitalize on the coin-operated billiard tables almost going to the extent of placing them in any visible part of the Empire like in pubs, clubs and canteens. Many tables were being designed as boxes so that they could be placed anywhere. Often the tables were designed as boxes, which could effortlessly be placed anywhere. Some companies like Alca and Valley were looking for these opportunities for a very long time.
In the sixty’s and seventy’s the famous coin operated table was gaining visibility all over United States. The interesting fact to note here is that these coin-operated tables were not making huge sums of money for the owners instantaneously but the advantage was that there was no need for anyone to change them for at least six months. People could actually use these pool tables for at least five years and the only trouble that one needed to take was changing of the balls and the cloth placed on the tables.
Most of the tables coming from United States were really expensive as they had to be transported over large distances and many found buying these tables quite problematic. This problem was finally combated when a company in Manchester decided to set up a factory in United Kingdom but they built them with a difference.
Hazel Grove or HGM as they came to be addressed finally gave out the verdict that the huge two and a quarter inch sized balls which the US were playing with were actually really big in comparison to the rooms in which the match was being played. Thus the only solution to this problem came in the form of cutting down the size of the table to an appropriate size. The tables were changed and it was the size of the table that finally convinced the people that they were playing on the right sized tables. The size of the new tables was now six and a half feet and seven feet.
The size of the ball also was reduced and finally came down to a small two-inch diameter or a one and seven eighth inch cue ball. The entire match was now being given a new face and makeover. The cloth of the table was changed to a new napped snooker cloth with flat rubbers. The US played with extremely heavy balls with really wide pockets, which were most suited for playing a perfect match of defensive pool. The new HGM tables had smaller balls with a napped cloth.
Hazel grove finally ended up changing the face of the match and went on to introduce the Super league concept.
Super league pool tables were soon found to be making way into the foreign markets of United Kingdom, France and Channel Islands and many such places. The idea was to increase the price of the tables and then finally take a percentage from the profit to use it as a prize for different closed competitions. This definitely would draw people in hordes to get the prize but for that one had to buy the table and that was the catch.
The snooker table was too big for most places but the new variety of pool table was much smaller and therefore could be placed conveniently. A buyer could place it in his club or bar and start raking in profits after a year. It was elementary mathematics as for example one could recover the money spent on it in a year’s time and then reap the profits. A person could make huge profits out of it since it did not have any maintenance cost.
English ‘pool’ now played with small balls, became increasingly popular in the whole of England as many leading manufacturers were now opening outlets all over the northern fringes of England.
Billiard was garnering a lot of support from all over the world, though the whole of United Kingdom was already under the tight grip of the match. Media made the match immensely popular, cashing in on the interest of the viewers towards it. Pool or snooker was actually able to cash in on this recognition that it had enjoyed for long. People were now hugely interested in playing any kind of match on the table with balls as they now found another venue for entertainment. An interesting report estimated that there were at least thirty thousand coin-operated tables that were placed in United Kingdom alone.
The match had a very funny twist to it. Interest in the match was soon found to be dwindling as playing with the cue and aiming for the perfect shot soon turned out to be quite difficult and eventually very boring. Those who were really good at the match could continue with the format of snooker for a considerably longer period of time. The match in England soon became a tussle for getting all the pockets covered without actually aiming at the shots.
Hazel Grove soon became one of the many companies who had to join the already long list of manufacturing companies as they really found it very trying and difficult to survive. Many old manufacturing companies became extinct as this business became fiercely competitive.
US tables were becoming more and more acceptable as the older version of the match was too slow for most people. US have always believed in anything, which has speed and the pace, and thus they now rooted for a match, which could provide the required speed.
The English pool industry was always bigger and larger in comparison to the US industry. However it ended up being a highly debatable issue as to which format of the match would finally be adopted. However it was in the late twentieth century that the big ball match actually picked up pace and garnered support and popularity from all over the world.
The irony however was that the growth in the Billiard industry in England was not the credit of an US company. Europe had taken the US format of the match after the Second World War. It was finally a company called Sam Billares that was responsible for showing the door to the small ball pool format in United Kingdom.
Though it would finally be the SAM Company, which would dominate the commercial pool industry, the Brunswick Company soon made its way again into the consumer sector. Though the match still continues to be extremely trendy the coming together of an array of fast paced computer matches has made it difficult for this match to survive. People are willing to spend money if they think its worth it, therefore, the larger ball version of the match became popular.
