Early humans had an instinctive response to their environment. During lazy days of hot summer weather they withdrew from the harsh sun to shield themselves under overhanging rocks and in cool caves. Came winter, the extreme cold caught them unprepared and they had to retreat even deeper into caves to withstand the bitter cold. It seemed that the sun and the howling winds and rain were following them everywhere.

And then, one day, far back in the history of human innovation, something dawned on one of our early forefathers. “If”, he thought to himself, “if we can extend the roof of this cave to the front, we can catch two flies with one swipe. We men can lie under this extended roof and watch the antelope arrive at the waterhole and then go down to catch supper. Secondly, we can in doing so, stop the mind-numbing nagging of the womenfolk about our incredible laziness”.

It was one small step for man and one giant step for mankind. And with it, the concept of residential awnings was born. Sophistication and further conceptualization followed as these early Einsteins gave birth to this new concept. A concept that developed into perfecting the usage of these window coverings and related awning material in due course.

Many suns and many moons later, we modern people are still improving on our first experiments with these exterior window coverings. We have not only changed the materials from crude sticks and broad leaves to acrylic fabrics, coated aluminum arms and beautiful patterns. We have also perfected a way to extend our prototype to become roll out awnings that covers huge areas against the same sun that still hunts the human race. And…we can roll those back in whenever we feel like it. Yes, we humans have created the retractable awning!

It was another paradigm shift and residential awnings were never the same again. Families started to compete against each other to come up with more and more colorful canvas fabrics. Some of these families even started to call themselves companies in order to promote their state of the art deck awnings and retractable patio models.

Some bright sparks discovered that the awnings added nicely to otherwise boring window treatments and window coverings. They also noticed that the devices were greatly enhancing the value of properties.

And then something even more profound happened. One sunny afternoon, whilst the women were sunning themselves and the children were splashing in the pool, one of them ladies kindly ordered her husband to retract the covering. They were trying to catch the last of the sun’s rays and the shivering kids needed some warming up.

Now, the men were lazing about under the now very modern canopy, as in the old days in the caves, and didn’t really feel like cranking the retractable patio awning in. Whilst they were discussing this ongoing nuisance, one of them mentioned that there should be a motor that could at the push of a button roll the retractable awning in all by itself. It was another of those paradigm shift moments and the men toasted their newfound freedom with huge social screams and some good tasting stuff.

The men are still lazily discussing new ways to make these window shades even more enjoyable, but they have not come up with anything better yet. They do however expect the women to come out with blazing guns someday to ask for something unreasonable yet again. The world awaits that moment for a new paradigm shift in the advancement of retractable awnings.

A water feature will bring tranquility to your patio and is an ideal substitute for a pond if you have neither the time nor the inclination to maintain one. They are also much safer than a pond where young children are concerned.

The larger water features require a reservoir to feed them their water. These pebble pool reservoirs vary in size (the larger the feature, the larger the reservoir required) but the average is around 2 ft wide.

You simply bury the reservoir and sit your chosen water feature on top. Place some rocks and pebbles around the base, add water and switch on.

Unlike a pond, all of the water is continually recycled and because there is no plant or fish life you can use special water feature clarifying solutions to keep it crystal clear.

Water features big enough to require a reservoir should only be used on a large patio area or set up some distance from it. Remember, you are trying to create a tranquil effect with the sound of trickling water and not recreate the sights and sounds of Niagara Falls. While some of these big features may look spectacular they can be over powering.

For the small to average size patio there are lots of options. Many free standing water features are solar powered which means when you rearrange your patio furniture you can also move the feature to a new spot. Being solar powered also means there are no cables to bury and they cost nothing to run. The downside of course is that they require direct sunlight to function where as a feature that is powered from the mains can be used after sunset.

Another option is a wall fountain. These consist of a small trough with an outlet a foot or two above in the design of a lion’s mouth, dolphin, flower etc. The trough acts as the reservoir and a small pump hidden in the back feeds the water up to the outlet.

Wall fountains are ideal if your patio butts up to the back of your home. Positioning the fountain directly behind an internal power supply means an electrician can easily get a mains supply to the feature without any cables being visible.

Cheesecake – a Delicious Summertime Treat

I thoroughly enjoy having my friends over to swim in my backyard swimming pool on a hot summer day. We splash and frolick just like little kids. Swimming in the cool, refreshing water is a great way to work up an appetite. There is no better refreshment to serve my friends than a glass of freshly brewed iced tea and a slice of New York style cheesecake, topped with juicy strawberries. The rich, bold flavor of the cheesecake combined with the sweet berries is a filling taste sensation that satisfies everyone’s hunger. There is no other summertime treat as refreshing and delicious!

I love hosting backyard barbecues in the warm summer months. My friends bring a variety of “dishes to share” and I supply the meat and dessert. Cheesecake is my dessert of choice and it is always the highlight of the meal. Of the different cheesecake varieties from which to choose, I usually opt for Key Lime cheesecake because its tangy, tart flavor enhances the flavor of the usual barbecue fare. Because it’s not too heavy, it seems to be the perfect choice for a summertime dessert.

I am eagerly anticipating the arrival of summer, especially after such a cold, dreary winter. Summertime is a wonderful time to get together with my family and friends. I am looking forward to hosting barbecues and pool parties for my friends, as well as going on family picnics. Believe me, all of these activities involve food. I can’t think of a better summertime treat than cheesecake.

Then you can easily cover this with plaster or decorative tile or stone above the water level. The inside should be lined with a flexible liner to prevent the water from leaking out.

Plumbers will easily be able to connect the pump and the hoses for you after you have the pool in place and electricians can make sure the electrical connections are safe. If you decide to buy one of the ready made wall fountains that you see at home improvement or garden centers or that you have looked online, you will still have to do some work in order to get the fountain working. Routing the pipe is a difficult task and is a lot easier if you can incorporate the plumbing into the wall itself.

If there is nothing behind the wall, such as a neighbor`s yard or if you have built the wall just for the fountain, you can drill a hole through the wall to accommodate the pipes. If not, then you have to find a way of concealing these pipes so that they cannot be seen and this makes the fountain look as if it is part of the setting. The water will seem to come from a hidden spring and spout out through the fountainhead or whatever way you wish it to come out and then falls to the pool.
